Nacogdoches, the oldest town in Texas, offers many points of interest that are rich in history. Many are just a short walk away.
Oak Grove Cemetery (3 blocks): Dating from 1837, this cemetery is the final resting place of 4 signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence, including Thomas J. Rusk.
Downtown Nacogdoches (3 blocks): Downtown is just a short stroll away. There you will find numerous shops, the Visitors' Center, the Nacogdoches Fire Museum, and the Cole Art Center @ the Old Opera House. The Visitors' Center offers walkling tours of sections of the city, and there are often events downtown on weekends.
Adolphus Sterne House / Hoya Memorial Library (6 blocks): The Adolphus Sterne House was constructed in 1830, before Texas was a Republic, and was home to a prominent merchant and Texas Revolutionary leader. The house served as a gathering place for many significant figures in Texas history including Sam Houston, Thomas J. Rusk, Davy Crockett, Charles S. Taylor, and Cherokee Chief Bowles. The house reflects the occupancy of the two families who have owned the house - The Sternes and The Hoyas.
Lanana Creek Trail (trailhead 4 - 6 blocks): The Lanana Creek Trail, a three mile meandering path, follows the Lanana Creek through the middle of Nacogdoches. The trail weaves through forest, Pecan Park, and the Stephen F. Austin State University Mast Arboretum and offers several places to enter or leave the trail.
Stephen F. Austin State University: The SFASU campus is recognized as one of the most beautiful in the state of Texas and is characterized by tall pine trees and numerous species of flowers. The Old Stone Fort Museum is housed in a 1936 replica of Don Antonio Gil Y'Barbo's stone house. The Ruby Mize Azalea Garden is spectacular in season, and the Mast Arboretum features a wide variety of native plants. The Schools of Fine Arts and Music offer many theatrical and musical performances throughout the year, and the Cole Art Center @ the Old Opera House downtown features interesting art exhibits.
